I have just finished reading this wonderful trilogy from Michael Harrington and wanted to share the book with you.
The book is described in the following way:

This really was a book (I had the Kindle edition) that I could not put down. Michael Harrington has interwoven here in a dramatized way, the relationship between Church and State in Renaissance Florence and allows the reader to step inside the minds of both key players as well as observers of this time when the preaching of Fra Girolamo Savonarola held sway in Florence. One meets characters such as Niccolo Machiavelli, and gains a different understanding of what prompted him to form the views that he did. There is Sandro Botticelli, Michelangelo. Leonardo as well as other artists whose lives are affected by the fall of the Medici, and you sense the desperation of these artists who clearly relied on patronage for their living.
Most of all, Michael Harrington has provided the reader with the foundation to understand the complex nature of Florentine politics, as well as broader Italian politics, and how divisive and fracturing the relationship with the Papacy of the time.
I highly recommend this book to you if you have an interest in the history of Florence, or of broader Italian history. As with The Montefeltro Conspiracy, if the measure of a great book is that it drives you to read more, then Michael Harrington has excelled. I am avidly devouring my ever-increasing pile of books with a new found fervour to gain more knowledge.
